One of the enemy’s armored infantrymen burst apart in midair, sending its relatively massive engines corkscrewing out of control like finless SRMs. The pulsing flicker of their lasers had chewed up the front of the slab-like Challenger but none of the Clanners’ shots had penetrated. The flying ones weren’t as tough as the land-based ones he’d seen footage of, but they were terrifyingly quick and he had little doubt they’d be able to pry open a Tank’s hatches in an instant and cut the crew to ribbons.

“Toads ain’t supposed to fly,” Osanda grumbled. “It just ain’t right.”

“Did you see those horns?” Gunsho Bakr asked. “Not toads. Rhinoceros beetles.”

“I don’t care if one of them’s the second-coming of Christ himself,” Captain Ferraro interjected before real panic could set in. “We’ve trained for this. We know they’re going to be fast. Pick your targets and cut them down. Cut their numbers and they’re sure to break.”

“With all respect,” Gunsho Bakr replied. “You haven’t fought Clanners before. They don’t break.”

Ferraro didn’t seem fazed. “Then we kill them all. That always worked when—” he paused for a moment that stretched long enough to be awkward, “—when we fought House Kurita.”
